When I first started in 2004, I had no idea where to begin. I remember thinking, who’s going to book me? I’m not experienced enough. I don’t know enough. I couldn’t go on to Instagram for inspiration. There were no wedding business support groups on Facebook. I just had to go out there and figure it out. I made mistakes. I spent hours upon hours researching how I could create a profitable business in event decor.
But having a profitable business wasn’t enough. I needed to know what to buy and how much of it. How do drape a backdrop? No one was willing to tell me how much fabric to buy or which fabric would be the best in which situation. I remember I went to a reputable decorator for guidance, let’s just say tight-lipped would be an understatement. So away I went, visiting wholesalers. That resulted in what some would call shiny object syndrome. There wasn’t enough decor that I could buy. (I’m still a little guilty of that!) I needed everything!
I know what it feels like to start a business from scratch. To not know what to focus on first. Or being unsure if my work was good enough. I wish I had someone to turn to back then who could guide me so I didn’t make as many mistakes as I did, but now you do!
